FOSSEE's Scilab training workshop at VTU-Karnataka

FOSSEE, a project based at IIT-Bombay, well known for promoting the use of Open Source in Education for students, has taken it a step further! The ‘Free and Open Source Software for Education’ program has, conducted a Faculty-Training Workshop at the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) in Karnataka on 18 and 19 August, 2017. The University and its affiliate colleges brought together 11 teachers and 12 students to savour this superior quality instructional program.
Prof. Kannan Moudgalya, the Co-Principal Investigator at FOSSEE in Dept. of Chemical Engineering, IIT-Bombay familiarized the participants with a detailed overview of the Open Source culture and its benefits to the student community. He even highlighted  the various projects and activities undertaken by FOSSEE to encourage the use of FOSS in academia.

With Spoken Tutorials, the teachers got an insight about Scilab, an efficient numerical computation FOSS software based on numerically sound libraries, such as LINPACK, EISPACK, ODEPACK and DASSL. This was followed by a brief introduction on Xcos, a graphical programming interface with Scilab, by Prof. AB Raju, Professor and HOD of Dept. of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, KLE Technological University, who described how systems can be simulated and solutions can be observed visually using Xcos. He simulated electrical and mechanical systems using Xcos.

Day Two was likewise action-packed, making way for Spoken tutorials and a competent account of the Lab Migration and FOSSEE toolboxes by Shamika Mohanan, Project Research Associate at FOSSEE.

It can be conveniently said that ‘FOSSEE’s Scilab Training Workshop’ hit the bullseye! Many teachers are now willing to make FOSS a part of their curriculum and to encourage students to adopt it as a part of academics and research.

Testimonial and Feedback

I am looking forward to use the Scilab for Physics class and Lab to make the concepts to visualise.
  • Rajesh BM (Dept. of Physics, RV College of Engineering)

Workshop was very much useful to know more about Scilab , as well which encouraged to use it in research studies. Thank you”
  • Pooja (Dept. of E&C, Jain College of Engineering)

It was a good experience and learnt many new things in Scilab... I would like to thank the teaching faculty of IIT Bombay. They were very friendly and experienced.
  • Archana (Dept. of Computer Science and Engg, VTU Belagavi)

It was interesting to learn the things in Scilab and found it very useful. And the teaching faculty were very supportive and been there to help us at any time.
