A beginner's guide to R by Bhushan Manjareka

Hello, Friends! Are you new to R and looking for a quick guide to explore it? Well, your search ends here. I am Bhushan Manjarekar, Project Research Assistant at FOSSEE, a project that aims to promotes the use of Free and Open Source Software in Education.

So, let’s get started!

What is R?
As you all know, R is a language used by professionals for data analytics and statistical computations. What makes it so powerful is that it enjoys a vast community of acclaimed academics, industry practitioners and R enthusiasts, who work together for building modules (packages) based software solutions.

As R has been benefitted by folks from diverse communities of many backgrounds, usually packages are ready for various needs in fields and subfields of engineering, finance, medicine, and science. A complete list of available packages (11,108!) can be found at

So here comes the big question…

Why R in this constantly changing world of data science?

When it comes to FOSS, there is no doubt that Python and Scilab top the popularity list amongst students and faculty. Then why should one learn R? Or Is there any risk that R would be obsolete in the near future? In that case, what happens to the time one has invested in mastering this language?

Well, before we conclude on anything, let’s take a look at what the industry has to say in terms of research done in market share of R end users:

Whoa!!! Wasn’t that incredible? R does sound promising! Doesn’t it?

How can one practice R?
Fortunately, the internet is a magnificent resource with a lot of courses available for a novice learner in R programming. However, I personally feel the following link http://www.learndatasci.com/best-data-science-online-courses could help one systematically view and opt for courses from popular sites such as coursera, datacamp, udemy and lot more.
In fact, the FOSSEE project provides a broader platform for a student and a teacher to explore R. One can even view and play around with the codes of solved examples from standard engineering and science textbooks in R via the Textbox Companion Activity. Interesting... isn't it? Well, then hit the link http://r.fossee.in/ to know more.

Last but not the least, we also have the Spoken Tutorial http://spoken-tutorial.org/ that contains few basic tutorials in R for beginners especially college going students.

What are you waiting for? Get started with R.
